U.S. Officially Withdraws from World Health Organization After Nearly 80 Years

The United States has confirmed that it will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), reviving a decision first announced during Donald Trump’s presidency. The move follows an executive order signed shortly after Trump returned to office, restarting the formal one-year process required for a country to leave the global health body. The WHO, which was founded in 1948, plays a central role in coordinating international responses to disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

US officials have argued that the organization failed to act independently and transparently, particularly during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. They have also criticised what they describe as disproportionate influence by certain member states and questioned whether the WHO delivers sufficient value for the significant financial contributions made by the US, which has historically been its largest donor. As part of the withdrawal, the US plans to halt funding and recall government personnel working with the organization.

Health experts and international leaders have warned that the decision could weaken global cooperation on public health and limit access to vital disease-monitoring data. The WHO has expressed regret over the announcement, stressing that collaboration between countries is essential to prevent and respond to future health crises. Critics of the move argue that stepping away from the organisation may reduce US influence in shaping global health policy at a time when international coordination is more important than ever.
